5 Things to Consider When Choosing Blinds

There are many different varieties of blinds available on the market which can all be a great alternative to curtains, providing privacy as well as extra insulation for your home. Blinds are a key part of interior design and can come in a variety of finishes to supplement your home décor.

Variety

Blinds can come in many different varieties. There are roller blinds, roman blinds, vertical blinds, Venetian blinds and more, the list goes on. Each different type of blind has a number of different pros and cons so it’s advisable to think about what you’d like your blinds to achieve.

  • Roller blinds tend to block out a large amount of light, with the amount they let in not being adjustable, however, this can both be a good thing or a bad thing.
  • Roman blinds are similar, however, they can be made with many different materials to supplement your home décor.
  • Vertical blinds, on the other hand, tend to stay in front of a window to offer more privacy and to vary the amount of light they let in, although they are more limited in terms of the different designs that are available.

Finish

Interior design is becoming ever more important these days with video calls made from inside your own homes and it’s important to think about how you want your blinds to look. Blinds can be fabric or solid material and can come in a number of different finishes. It’s important to keep in mind that this can also have an impact on how they interact with both light and heat. Not to mention how easy they are to clean.

Light Transmission

Blackout blinds are often used in bedrooms and other places where it’s often desirable to block out all of the outside light, however, this isn’t desirable everywhere. It’s important to consider how your new blinds will interact with light and to decide whether you need blinds which are adjustable or maybe blinds that will still let in a portion of the outside light. For example, in a living room you may want the option to be able to block out a large amount of light when you’re watching TV but then to let through a large amount during other times.

Heat

One of the great properties of blinds is that they can make your house more thermally efficient making them an important part of interior design. Roller and Roman blinds are great insulators for your windows, keeping as much heat in during the winter or possibly out during the summer.

Colours can also have a big impact on blind’s ability to do this. During the summer, lighter blinds will reflect more of the light back out of the window, preventing the room from heating up, whereas, darker blinds are more likely to absorb the light causing your room to heat up.

Functionality

It’s important to remember that blinds will need cleaning periodically. For families with small kids and babies, it can make more sense to stay away from fabric blinds which are harder to clean. It can also make a lot of sense to invest in some motorised blinds when you have small children. These will provide additional safety as you don’t risk children playing with the chords to raise, lower and adjust your blinds.
